The Next Generation of Cooling Refrigerants. Stored in your air conditioner’s coils, refrigerants are liquids that cool and dehumidify your air. If we didn’t have refrigerants, we wouldn’t have air conditioning. Over the years, the most common AC refrigerant was R-22 (Freon), but in 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, R-22 will no longer be legal to produce because of its negative effects on the environment. Introducing R-410A To reduce environmental impacts, all Lennox® products are now engineered to work with the new R-410A AC refrigerant. R-410A is EPA-recognized and doesn’t contain chlorine, which means it’s ozone-friendly. You can feel at ease using this refrigerant in Lawrence because it’ll help make your AC perform efficiently, reliably and quietly, and deliver the same cool comfort in the warmer months. Additional Considerations If your AC or heat pump was made prior to 2010, it may not be R-410A-compatible. You probably should look into upgrading your cooling system before R-22 is totally phased out. The old refrigerant will become scarce in the next few years, costing you more to operate your system effectively. The Lennox products we offer at Scott Temperature work with R-410A, so you know we have an AC or heat pump you can better rely on. Additionally, avoid”alternate refrigerants that claim to work in R-22 systems. These include R-407C, R-438A and R-422, all of which can actually compromise your system’s performance.
